We All Love Love Stories
Another day, another question for me to ask that no one will answer. How's that sound? There I go doing it again.
Who loves a good rom-com? Let's talk about them; romantic comedies, for those of you not in the loop. Those funny love-stories that your girlfriend is always dragging you to on Valentine's day. Also, known as "chick-flicks" or, as Urban Dictionary defines: A romantic plot interspersed with light comedy, usually starring Meg Ryan or Sandra Bullock.
Everyone has their guilty pleasure movie, and it's usually a romantic comedy. There's just something about them that draws people in. Maybe their recurring theme: finding love. Usually, finding love in unusual circumstances, but let's make this as simple as we can. People love love stories. Everyone wants to find their true love, and they like hearing how other people found their true love. It gives people hope that even they will have their day in the sun.
Some people, though, enjoy the sexuality that comes with the romance part. Because sex sells, and you can't sell "romance" without some hot people rubbing together. It's what brings the boyfriend's and the husbands through the theater doors. "What are we seeing, The Proposal? I don't know, babe, it sounds kind of- What? Sandra Bullock has a partial nude scene? Okay, let's see how it is." Works every time. And the same goes for women, but not as broadly. Women love the story, but stay for Ryan Reynolds insane abs. Hot people are hot and everyone loves them.
Well, what about the teachings we get from rom-coms? Be yourself, be a nice person, let loose every now and again. From what I can see, the rom-coms that people enjoy the most are in the setting of a rich womanizer and a normal everyday woman. See where I'm going with this? They're made in a way that has regular women easily putting themselves in the shoes of the main character. "If she can bag a rich guy, so can I." And, that's not true of all rom-com's, but I see a lot of them dealing with regular people falling in love with someone extravagant, or with another regular person that has emotional problems. It's easy to market for everyone because everyone relates to the main characters. Love is for everyone. Even you!
Romantic comedies are a staple in cinema, and they're here to stay. Even though there are a lot of critics that see them as the biggest waste in the movie industry. People love them, and people have the final say about a movie's popularity. That's why cult-films exist. Critics hate a movie, but people love it, so it keeps making money. Using that formula, Rom-coms will never die because of their appeal. People want to fall in love, and these movies show them how it can happen. It gives people hope.
I hope you all enjoyed this post. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
I'll see you all tomorrow. Buh-bye.

So what is your guilty pleasure rom-com? I’ll give you a couple of favorites ... Sixteen Candles, Sleepless in Seattle.
ReplyDeleteThe Proposal is a great movie. ALso, any Queer Eye episode that deals with a guy wanting to look better for his significant other.
